Young and Restless In China/ Frontline

YouTube Preview Image

Last night I was glued to the tube watching Frontline and their documentary about life in China. It is not reality tv. It is harsh reality television.

It is “Thank God I don’t live there” television. I was walking around today thinking about the young woman who had to fight off her parents and her community to avoid an arranged marriage. And finally managed to do it.

The alternative? She has a job working in the city in some sort of high tech factory. And she works eleven hours per day seven days per week. Her task is to put four wires into a receptacle six hundred times per hour. That is ten times per minute for eleven hours. Over and over again.

Maybe she gets a half hour for lunch.

But the good news is that she meets someone she genuinely likes and they fall in love. So she has some happiness in her life. And she is a cute little thing. I feel like sending her a wedding present.

She will probably insert millions of wires into receptacles before she is done.

AAggghhhhhhhh.

Anyway. Moving on. There are many interesting characters that we discover. There is a young guy with a winning smile and a very attractive shirt who plans to tailor shirts for individuals and sell them on the internet. And the next time we see him he has ten women working on sewing machines and boxes of shirts ready to go. Amazing!

He becomes a Christian and seems totally satisfied. There’s no girlfriend in the picture so he doesn’t have to worry about supporting a family. It’s just him and dear old mom.

Smart guy!

Most of them are not so lucky. Loneliness takes its toll. But everything revolves around money. Relationships suffer. It’s a hard life. I couldn’t handle it. I would have to take a slow boat to the United States. And that option is available to some of them. But the parents exert an amazing influence on them and they stay.

David Archuleta vs. David Cook/ American Idol/ Where’s Billy Jean?

The boxing analogy was working pretty well as American Idol had it’s biggest night of the year. This is what it’s all about and why we have been patiently listening to “pitchy” notes and half baked versions of songs we have always loved. And things were going well until the introductions when David Cook announced that it wasn’t a competition for him. He was going to have “fun”.

If losing is fun I guess he must have had a great time last night. In any case he started with I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Lookin For. And it was a solid if predictable performance. His second song was something written for the program called Dream Big. And I am sure the writers and their families were excited about his performance of it.

And his final performance was The World I Know. This was his choice and his voice was in great shape but he should have sung Billy jean again. Perhaps he would not have had enough “fun” performing the same song twice.

If he was competing he would have done it. He would have stirred the soul of the audience by singing it even better than he sang it the first time. Perhaps that would have solved the problem of singing the same song twice.

Because there is always room for improvement on this show. But he didn’t and so he lost his best chance to win the competition. And I’m not sure he even had much fun because he cried after finishing his last performance. Why did he cry? Possibly because he threw the fight. It must hurt terribly to not show everybody what you can really do.

Archy on the other hand came out to win. He wants to win. You can tell. He sang Don’t Let The sun Go Down On Me for his first number. And the nerves were evident but then he picked it up a notch and really got into it. He goes somewhere when he sings. We just hope he will keep his eyes open so that he doesn’t fall off the stage.

For his second song he did something called In This Moment. Once again we had a song created for the event and he pretty much did the same thing that he did for the first number. Except the nerves were gone. Same genre, same emotions. And the same little girls screaming at him from the front of the stage.

And for his third song David once again sang Imagine. And while he was singing I was imagining him challenging himself in the way David Cook did earlier. David C noted that he had never performed his third song before.

But Archie did a nice job. He is totally committed to that song and he can claim the prize for being the very best vocalist of the evening. It was absolutely beautiful.

But I was vaguely disappointed by the whole thing. I would have liked either of them to sing something like Billy Jean. I would have liked to see a star born right there on the stage. And I don’t think it’s ever going to happen on this show. Because a real genius is not going to give it up. He or she might tease us a little bit during the season with flashes of brilliance but then will clam up during the finale and avoid the trap.

Archy wins tonight. He will be happy. David Cook will be happy to go off and explore on his own. But he still has to deal with the tour and singing the same songs every night. Bummer. He better have his pirate joke working really well.

Update: So David Cook is the new American Idol! And the show tonight was inspirational in a way that last night’s show was not. I am happy that America got it right in spite of the fact that Mr. Cook played a little hide and seek last night. He certainly had Simon fooled. Apologies all around!

David did show flashes of genius during the season. And maybe he DID want to win. He certainly seemed very happy after he found out about it. Maybe he simply didn’t want to see Archie disappointed. This is one very intelligent, talented and caring person.

And maybe American Idol has learned a little bit about letting these young people go out and explore their talents in ways that make sense to them. The well documented dust up between the first winner, Kelly Clarkson, and Clive Davis may have led to some discussions in that regard. And allowing Fantasia to do her thing last week certainly gives credence to this notion.

All I know for sure is that I am very happy David C won. Archie is a nice kid and he has a bright future but he is not ready for New York, New York. He needs to finish high school in a way that Jordin Sparks did not. And speaking of Ms. Sparks it certainly was wonderful to see her back after the doctor imposed hiatus. She looks and sounds great. And so does Carrie Underwood.

The show has been over for about ninety minutes and here is what it says in Wikipedia about all of this.

The program seeks to discover the best singer in the country through a series of nationwide auditions. The outcomes of the later stages of this competition are determined by public voting by phone. The format features three judges who give critiques of the contestants’ performances in order to facilitate the voting: record producer Randy Jackson; pop singer and choreographer Paula Abdul; and music executive Simon Cowell. The show is hosted by former children’s game show emcee and television personality Ryan Seacrest; comedian Brian Dunkleman cohosted with Seacrest in season one. The American Idol band is led by Rickey Minor. The show usually airs on Tuesday and Wednesday nights in the US and Thursday and Friday nights in the UK (two days after the US airing). In its seven seasons, its winners have been Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, Jordin Sparks and David Cook. Hicks was the oldest winner at 29, Sparks the youngest at just 17.

Congratulations David Cook. It didn’t take someone long to add your name. And congratulations American Idol on a great show. You are showcasing our young people and their talent in a very positive way.

And the final shot of the show could not have been any better if it was scripted. David Cook’s brother looking into the camera a proud and happy guy forgetting for a moment his fight with cancer.

That’s my brother!”

Perfect.

Jordin Sparks Sick/ Misses Concert Date With Alicia Keys/ Her Grandmother Comments

How does it feel to call in sick the first night of your first major concert tour? I don’t know. But I would like to ask Jordin Sparks. Because she didn’t perform this evening at the Hampton Coliseum with Alicia Keys.

How do I know since it’s only eight pm and the concert started about an hour ago? Because I was there. Or, at least, I was approaching the gate when an announcement came over the PA system to all the folks standing in line.

Jordin Sparks will not be performing tonight.

She’s sick.

Hopefully she doesn’t have anything major wrong with her. I can imagine how upset she must be about it. And I hope she feels better very soon and can start performing again.

And so we got back into the car and went down the road again. But it was not a waste of time. Because I had a chance to talk with my son. I talked him into going down to Hampton with me after my wife couldn’t go (a wedding came up). And he was nice enough to accept my invitation providing we came straight back after Jordin sang. He has “plans”.

It’s Saturday night after all! And things don’t really get going until nine or ten pm anyway! Things start happening just as I am going to bed.  What is wrong with this picture?

I would have enjoyed seeing Alicia but that was the deal. So we had a nice drive back and he told me all about Senator Obama and what a wonderful President he is going to be. He mentioned that he was thinking about joining the Coast Guard Reserve. And he told me about the courses he has picked out for next semester.

The road was fairly peaceful except for a few crazy drivers (You know who you are) and one State Trooper who for some reason unknown to us was driving backward in the emergency lane and went by us on the right at about fifty miles per hour.

That’s not easy to do.

So it was an interesting ride home. And now I am here waiting for Beth to return and wondering about Jordin. I hope she is alright. She is only eighteen years old after all. And tonight must have been a very important night for her.

Get well soon Jordin. We still love you. It’s not the end of the world.

Our young people are the most important thing in the world to us. All we want to do is support you all and help you to grow.

Update: There is a report out that says Jordin is having problems with her vocal cords. She needs to rest or they could be permanently damaged.

Update2: Jordin’s grandmother comments below and notes that Jordin’s vocal cord was “in danger of bursting, so vocal rest was ordered by her doctor. ” So it is not as bad as I have been reading in some places.   Hopefully she will be well soon. And thanks to Nana for relieving a little of the anxiety some of us are having about Jordin.

REST jORDIN! Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown Sing No Air Tonight on American Idol

Jordin and Chris are taking center stage tonight on American Idol to sing their hit song No Air. And unless St. Peter calls me home this afternoon I plan to be there. Jordin Sparks won the AI contest last year as we all know and since then has put out a CD that has done very well. American Idol and this blog go together well. I started blogging because Jordin inspired me to be more creative.

But she has not been the only one to do that. There have been others on AI and there have been other shows as well. We live in an age where you can stand in line one day and be a successful and well known artist the next. That is what American Idol has done for many. And blogging has done the same thing for many others.

We live in an age where you can discover your talent and show it to the world. The world will then tell you what it thinks of your talent. But it’s not an all or nothing process anymore. There are many more avenues to success. So if you don’t make it to the finals on AI you can still end up with an Academy Award like Jennifer Hudson. I’m surprised no contestant has started a blog. Or maybe someone has and I have not gotten the word. They obviously would have the basis for a very successful enterprise on the internet.

So focus on your talent and start thinking about where you would like to go. Reality television has taught us that we are all in this together. And just because you are not the next great pop star doesn’t mean you will be pushed into obscurity. As long as you don’t do something totally ridiculous and turn everybody off. That has happened a few times. But it seems like we have all decided to start promoting from within instead of letting some dude in a penthouse office do it. We have joined the discovery process and it is a great thing for all of us.

Update: Well, Jordin and Chris did their song tonight and they sounded fabulous. Jordin has amazing eyes. If you watched the show I’m sure you must have noticed when the camera first found her how brilliant are her eyes. And she did a great job. She is going to be a great star. Chris already is a big star. And the two of them together bring excitement to millions of young people who need great role models.

I’m sure all the comments about them being a couple are going to start up again here. But I am telling you guys Jordin doesn’t have time for that stuff right now. She is working very hard and learning her craft. She is building the frequent flying miles.

And two people in show business do not a happy couple make.
