Does anybody besides me write an email once in awhile and send it to someone who never responds in any way? I’m not talking about every day but maybe once or twice a month. Or maybe it is just me. I sent an email the other day to someone who writes poetry. I would say it was a hobby on their part. Jut like yours truly. We are not talking about Robert Frost here in either case. This is someone in my niche as the saying goes.

And no response has been forthcoming.

It always seems to be guys too. Lorelle has been blogging for over ten years and she writes books. But I know that if I put a comment on her blog and I need some help she will be there with a response.

So I am working on a follow up letter to use in cases like this.

Dear Fellow Blogger,

This is a response to your non-response following the original email I sent to you sometime last month. First of all let me say again how much I enjoy your blog. There are a couple of misspelled words here and there but who is counting? The important thing is that you have a few posts that are very good. I was talking with you wife last week and she says there isn’t a day that goes by that you don’t manage to spend at least twelve hours at the computer. So it must be very satisfying to see your efforts start to pay off.

Before your lovely wife published her name and address on the internet I used to wonder how couples manage to enjoy themselves when one or both were busy blogging and working outside jobs.

And now I know!

Thank you for sharing some of your experiences with me. I must admit that I was hurt at first when you didn’t respond to my email. But it’s all good. And in some cases it is all very, very good!

You can bet that I’m looking forward to sending you more questions and not receiving your replies in the future!!

Your blogging friend,

David

I have a friend who is trying to get a job. We are both in our mid to late fifties. And my friend wants to contribute something by putting all her experience and excellent work habits to good use. Any employer should roll out the red carpet for someone like this because you are not going to find a better employee.

So I was amazed when she told me that in the interview she had been asked about her age. In the first place you never ask a woman about her age. But in certain settings it is illegal as well. An employer cannot ask about age, race or religion. And they cannot ask about disabilities either. Or so they say. But some who should know better cannot get to the important issues when conducting a job interview.

This is a part of the aging process that I have not discussed in previous posts. I have written about depression but not about how it causes problems getting or keeping a job. There are millions of folks out there trying to hold down jobs while they are depressed most of the time. And many of them are trying to drink their way out of the depression. Alcohol is a depressant so all it does is add fuel to the fire once the party is over. It’s a terrible cycle that leads to the destruction of lives in some cases.

And much of it could be prevented if those who have these problems would seek treatment and discover medication that can help. But then medical treatment and medication are expensive and most do not have medical insurance unless they have a job. And it’s difficult to get a job if you are depressed. More destructive cycles!

I would just say that if someone has to beg or borrow to find the funds for the treatment that will help the depression they should do it today. Don’t spend it on alcohol or cigarettes. Don’t spend it on much of anything except this.

Focus on reversing the cycle before it spirals out of control . In a week or two things can be looking much different. And we should not assume our problems will never go away. Life is about change. Sometimes we focus on the good times and wish they would not stop. But the good part is that life doesn’t discriminate in this regard. It can carry away all the problems too. We just need to give it a chance.

Writing About Our Experiences Growing Up

I have been reading the blogs of two of my neighborhood pals at BlogCatalog tonight. And both of them just happened to be writing at length about childhood experiences. I find this kind of writing fascinating from an individual standpoint. And it is in my opinion more compelling reading if references are made to things we all recognize from our own pasts. Lozster, for example, talks about the Beatles while he describes sitting in a car waiting for his father. There is the picture of them crossing Abbey Road. I was waiting for them to walk up to Lozster in his father’s car and say hello for a moment! But things went in another direction and it was all very well done. There was much more there than the words . Well done, Lozster. http://midlife-journey.blogspot.com/2007/08/bleary-road.html

And my other neighbor, Nessa, talked about harvesting crops as a child and riding a water buffalo. I was caught up in her description of the work. And it was very hard work. But I was also seeing the country change as a whole as young people migrated to the city and jobs that began to open up there. And that resonates with my sense of history much as Lozster’s mention of the Beatles did. There is not much chance I would ever have had the opportunity to hear any of this if not for blogging. Our worlds are so far apart. My upbringing in Massachusetts did not involve anything like this although I harvested apples a few times. Even if I read about similar things in a book it would not be the same. A blog offers the opportunity to exchange thoughts. It is closer to sitting around a campfire than reading a book. The computer screen is the firelight of our modern age.
If you would like to read these two posts I recommend them. And maybe I will write something about being a child in the land of the Salem witches soon! http://nessa-mumblings.blogspot.com/

Blogs and Increasing Income

(Updated from earlier in the week)

After the storms and near tornadic conditions yesterday I assume a cold front moved through our area. It certainly seemed like it last evening when we took a walk on the boardwalk. A strong, cool wind was blowing and conditions couldn’t have been much more different from earlier in the day. Last night we slept with all the windows open and that provided the conditions for a good sleep. So after six or seven hours of that why not pop up and do some things? Being older means needing less sleep and wanting to enjoy these good years. How can we do this while sleeping? Maybe this will be the morning the sun arrives in triumphal splendor tossing aside the blanket of humidity it was wrapped in yesterday.

In any case there is time early in the morning to think fresh thoughts and let the mind wander in constructive ways. It is a pretty amazing thing to be able to broadcast these thoughts world wide. So what are they exactly?

“”Another shift in the online marketplace is how we view the World Wide Web. The World Wide Web has been transformed over the last two years into the World LIVE Web.

Content is being created at such a rapid rate that Google, Yahoo!, and MSN have all completely revamped their search engine algorithms to reflect the LIVE nature of New Media.

If you try and do business the same old World Wide Web way, your’re going to sink.

Why do you think we see all the top Internet marketers sharing all their “top secrets” they’ve been using for the last few years at big seminars around the United States? Do you think they’re still using those techniques?

No, they’re sharing what they’ve wrung dry and now that’s going out to the masses of mid and lower level Internet marketers. And doing so will further accelerate the demise of those techniques.

The top Internet marketers are on to new ways to use New Media to create buzz and to build relationships. (They’re just not sharing this with anyone else yet) “”

No, I’m not turning into a business blog. This is definitely a personal blog containing a lot of personal opinions. Truth will sneak up on both of us if it finds its way here. But a lot of you are interested in making money on the web and this guy is talking about doing that in a big way. He’s talking revolution, baby! And Kojack would be interested if he was still here.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get excited about the rapidly changing marketplace. It’s a new world, baby!

And it must be a brave new world because the old industrial era was “all about training sheep”. Baaaaa. Granted, my next to worse (see worst in archives) was working on a car assembly line on Friday and Monday nights while the regulars were busy throwing parties for themselves. But this was back in the seventies when your car generally rocked, rattled and rolled down the street while throwing off bolts and toxic fumes.

Those were the days my friend. We thought they’d never end. But thankfully they did and you can move forward with jobs that require you sit at home in your pajamas. If you want to do it that way. I don’t particularly like pajamas but we will leave the scary blog stories for another time.

For those who stopped here because of the title of this post I have given you a resource you might not already own. Get it. It’s calling your name. And when it makes you rich don’t forget where you got it. Links all around! A toast to older guys who once fought in the industrial revolution and ran out of there in the middle of a shift because it was preferable to going nuts.

Sometimes we burn our bridges so that we must must move forward. I love the information age because I knew its predecessor so well. And John-Paul says we have now moved into even another age. It’s the communication age, baby!

And it’s time to check out the sunrise.

Update: I had a chance to look around the webpage associated with this book. It’s pretty interesting. So here’s the link in case you would like to soak up some positive energy on this bright Saturday morning. And yes it did get bumped to the front of the line.
