The Blue Heron was fishing the other morning in the spot normally occupied by the geese. The geese don’t like anyone coming into their territory. So when the heron left they quickly moved back home.
Then he returned and they spent a few moments talking to each other. But then one looked away and the other one looked away.
And they both went about their business.

Blue Herons do not have domestic relationships similar to the other birds we see. While they will remain monogamous during a breeding season the male will go off with someone new at other times. Perhaps this is why we see them foraging alone during our trips to the U or the Ginter Botanical Gardens while the ducks and geese move about in pairs.
