I don’t think I will be heading down to Belle Isle on the James River in the next few days. Some of the photos in this blog are from there. It’s a nice place. But there is a bear lose in the city. And he’s probably pretty hungry if he’s desperate enough to go down there.
There are lots of animals who wander down from the mountains from time to time using the James as a handy guidepost to civilization. Not long ago a guy who has a home overlooking the river told me he saw a huge buck in his backyard. Apparently the deer was lonely because before you can say Bambi loves Thumper five times he jumped up on his deck and through the plate glass window into the living room.
The deer did a lot of damage in the house. But he didn’t eat anybody. The thing I keep thinking about is that film about the guy who went to Alaska to make friends with the bears. His name was Timothy Treadwell and he liked to talk to the bears. If they got a little too aggressive he would scream at them and chase them away. He was amazing.
Until one day he went head to head with this old bear who was having trouble finding enough to eat. The bear was not impressed with all the screaming. He was in a “either you shoot me or I am going to have you for lunch” frame of mind. And our friend didn’t have a gun.
Our bear who is running around the city sounds a lot like this bear. And they have been interviewing people on the radio who have seen him.
“I saw him”.
“He was brown”.
“He was a bear”.
“He wanted to eat me”.
“I ran like hell”.
A lot of big black dogs have been mistaken for the bear. If I was a big black dog I think I would stay indoors for awhile. Because there are also a lot of guns in the city. And guys who would love to get their pictures in the paper standing over the bear and looking happy.
But it doesn’t look like this is going to happen. Because the guy on the radio just announced that a bear was killed crossing Interstate 95 about five am this morning.
I-95 runs through the city too.

Bear With A Stick is doing well. It has over 1400 views in the past two days from SU viewers. So it is already the second best post in terms of numbers I have ever written. Why is this? Maybe because it’s a cute photo of a bear who is exhibiting a pretty amazing degree of intelligence. But bears are really smart aren’t they? And this post also has a cute story with it. It works together somehow in a way that I have often attempted and seldom realized. If it has a few more reviews it may end up going into the big leagues. You may push the Stumble button someday and there it will be! I may push the Stumble button someday and there it will be and then I will have a heart attack.
I can hear the television in the next room. Dancing With The Stars is on and Marie Osmond just got the boot. Oh, well. That’s show business. I can remember watching Marie and Donnie on the show they had together when I was a teenager. Marie looks pretty good for somebody who has to be at least 75 years old.
Just kidding. I saw the recent episode where she fell out on the floor in the middle of the program. It must be live television. Anyway she fainted and was out for the count so they went to a commercial. She was fine after the commercial. I read somewhere that someone thinks she pretended to faint. Why would anyone pretend to faint on television? I won’t answer that one. It’s time I gave my readers the chance to answer some questions. What’s that I hear? Crickets?
I was thinking about inviting someone to do a guest post on my blog. Anybody think they would like to do that? The other idea I had was to post a question and try to get some posts about it. Then we could vote on the winning post and that person would get links from everyone.
Here’s a subject for the post. Try to remember something that happened to you that was awful at the time. But now looking back it seems kind of funny. And now that you have settled down you see that this incident benefited you in some way. Does that sound interesting? I am open to other ideas.
Today it was beautiful outside. Temperatures were great and the weather was clear. But now my medicine is beginning to kick in and that means it’s time to take the long nap. The nap that lasts until the sun comes up. I wrote a poem about waking up in the morning and remembering your dreams about a beautiful woman. You might enjoy it. She’s around here somewhere but I’m tired of linking everything up. I am taking a break. Drum roll. Crash.
Have a nice evening. Everyone. Thanks for reading my weblog. It takes a lot of patience and fortitude to do that. Catch you on the other side.
Update: Morning! And Bear is up to 1900 views overnight. Yogi and Smokey are impressed!

Commercials are not all ridiculous of course. We all have our favorite commercials going back to whenever they started trying to make funny ones. What are some of yours? Right now I am enjoying the cell phone commercial where the caller makes a comment and the call is dropped. There is this period of silence while the caller begins to shake with fear. On the other end there is general enjoyment of whatever was said. But our caller does not know about this and begins backpedling in an attempt to recover from whatever he or she has said that offended.
This reminds me a lot of weblogging. I write something and then there is this period of general silence in most cases. Some things that are written never gain any acknowledgment at all. But you really don’t know and if you start to react like the person in one of those commercials you are doomed. As far as blogging is concerned you might as well forget about it.
