Watching the Sun Go Down

I had a chance this evening to go down to the river and watch the sun set. It was very comfortable outside. The bugs haven’t started multiplying too badly yet. And it was very quiet away from the road and the bridge. I parked the car and walked down to where the road runs right next to the river and sat on a rock. It’s funny howI need a reason to do this. I drove down here so I could take photos of the sunset. Would I have said goodbye to my wife and come down here just to WATCH the sunset? Very unlikely.

And in fact I have come down here to this very spot about five times in the past few months.

So I listened to the river as it quietly went by the rock and the photographer. I watched the ever changing colors in the sky and a momma duck with her large brood swim downstream.

When I started doing this a few months ago I would hurry to be there before the sun reached the horizon. As we all know it doesn’t take long to disappear once it has touched the trees.

But now I don’t even worry about it. Because the really interesting time for me is when the sun has gone down and its rays start coming UP and hitting the clouds sideways. This usually creates far more interesting displays. And the best colors usually happen just before dark settles on the scene.

And when I come home and download the photos I have to try and remember the colors. Because the camera doesn’t really get them right. And the photo editor doesn’t exactly get them right with its auto settings either.

I have to adjust the colors based on the picture in my mind. This is when the process seems most like painting to me.

So these are a few of the photos I took this evening. Just think! I could have been home watching the television instead of doing this.
