American Idol/ Tuesday April 8

This week’s performances left me wondering who is going to demonstrate on a consistent basis that they have what it takes to be the next American Idol. Jordin was doing it week after week at this stage last year. And so was Melinda for that matter.

Michael Johns sang Dream On and once again did a popular version of a song almost as good as the original. I am beginning to wonder if he has any original bones in his body. Please Michael could you add your special flair to a song just one time. You do have something special for us don’t you?

Syesha Mercado sang I Believe and made a good choice. The judges liked Fantasia’s version better. We thought she delivered it with conviction and liked it at least as well as the effort by the prior contestant.

Jason Castro sand Somewhere Over the Rainbow and the judges loved it. It was a beautiful rendition that gave everyone a little view into his soul. Hopefully Michael was watching and taking notes.

Kristy Lee Cook sang Anyway and her AI experience is absolutely demonstrated by the words in this song. She sang it well. She looked fantastic. This is one tough girl in a beautiful and delicate package. She is heading in the right direction and probably will outshine and out sing Kelly Pickler someday on the country charts.

David Cook sang Innocent and slid backward reminding us of how he used to look down at the audience. This time he managed to convey a message written on his hand while he was doing it. David please send us a vocal message and try to build on your successes instead of going off in a new direction.

Carly Smithson sang The Show Must Go On and the first two verses were very promising. But she got pitchy in the chorus and the emotion build got sidetracked there. She did demonstrate more passion but overall it was not a great night for her. And it looked like she was dressed in slacks over a bathing suit. Take some notes from Kristy.

David Archuleta sang Angels and with such a beautiful voice it was a very moving rendition of the song. The runs were great and his innocence and honesty shines through. This was probably the best performance of the night and it put him back on top and in front of someone who would rather speak to us through his hand.

What is that joke? “Tell it to the hand” or something like that.

Brooke White sang You’ve Got A Friend and was wise to do so. We really liked the beginning but she didn’t quite deliver the whole song. The scratchiness in her voice is quite attractive. But it looked like one of those performances that people give after they learn they are leaving the show.

I was left with the impression that this girl thinks she is going home soon.

Top three are David A, Jason and Kristy Lee Cook.

Middle two are Brooke and Michael

Bottom three are David C, Carly and Syesha
