- Football Predictions And Outcome/ Patriots vs Chargers / Giants vs Packers/ January 2008
It’s time for football predictions. We have four teams left and they are playing tomorrow. That’s my first prediction.
And I have been doing well lately as those of you know who have been following along. You may say “That’s a stupid prediction. Of course they are playing tomorrow. It says so in TV Guide.” But I would warn you not to believe everything you read in TV Guide. Or any other media outlet for that matter.
Including this one. I am an officially designated media outlet and the head of 72 other outlets. Most of them are only electrical outlets at this point but they may someday be promoted if they do well.
Remember the World Series and the earthquake? Sure they played the game anyway. But they could have stopped it. Highways were collapsing and people dying all around them. I understand “The game must go on” but next time it could be a 6.8 quake. And that would do it.
No more football if that happens. You can play in the snow. But you can’t play if there are 200 foot deep chasms on the field and no wildly cheering fans. At least I don’t think you can.
I am in a bit of a quandry here because I am not really feeling it about any of these teams. And I don’t want to mess up a pretty good record. So let’s just say these are ideas about the games. Predictions would be too strong a word.
First let me just say that Norv Turner got a bad deal with the Redskins and now he feels very lucky to be in a championship game. Why do I say that? Because my wife said it to me about an hour ago. She also likes their running back LaDainian Tomlinson because he is such a stand up guy and does a lot of volunteer work with kids. He was profiled on 60 Minutes the same weekend that Michael Vick was sentenced and I have to believe that was damage control. But you can’t take anything away from LT for that. He is doing his part by pulling the NFL up by its ears so it doesn’t sink to new lows.
So go San Diego. It’s too bad you are playing my New England Patriots however. Because you are going to lose. Sorry LT. Sorry Norv. You both have really strange names and deserve to go to the Super Bowl. But it’s not going to happen. Maybe next year.
Patriots 32 Chargers 17.
And now for the second half of our dynamic football pred….I’m sorry. I mean “Ideas.”
But first we have this. My lovely wife Beth told me it was going to snow today. So about 30 minutes ago she said “It hasn’t started to snow yet”. And I said (laughing) ” It’s 40 degrees outside”.
Ten minutes later she came into the room and said, “It’s snowing outside”. So I just looked out the window and there wasn’t/ isn’t a snowflake in sight.
What does this mean?
One. She has convinced herself she is right and therefore it is snowing outside even if it isn’t.
Two. Possibly she will make it snow by the strength of her conviction that it is snowing.
********
We will have to wait and see. In the meantime the Giants are going to end their happy ride into the playoffs when they hit the wall against Green Bay and its incredible pass defense. We don’t even have to get into the quarterback mismatch. It’s time to get back to the snow situation.
Green Bay 38 Giants 17
Beth just came in and announced that our dog Sparky has found a nice spot under a bush out back and is sitting “in the snow”. I looked outside and it is, in fact, snowing.
The Snow Queen strikes again.
Update: O00ps. Clearly I was too impressed with the Packer’s win against the Seahawks in the snow. Because they didn’t look nearly as good against the Giants. And the young quarterback outplayed the grizzled veteran. I seem to remember that the last time Green Bay was in this position it was very close and Brett threw an interception. Wasn’t that against the Steelers?
In any case I should have read my earlier statements about the Giants again. Because they continue to show a great deal of spirit on the field. And it all goes back to their coach and his willingness to risk injury to his players to keep them fired up and ready to play.
They know how well they played the Patriots before and that means more than any pep talk. I almost am hesitant to bet against them again. Even when they are playing my fabled New England Patriots.
Well we have plenty of time to get to that.
