Yesterday and today have been so busy. I forgot to do this yesterday and feel bad about it. But that’s the way it goes with this particular emotion much of the time. Maybe I should speak just for myself but I tend to believe I am not the only one. We rush around doing stuff and forget the most basic, significant things about our existence. Until one day when they are gone.

For instance. Have you ever not been able to breathe? For some reason there was no air and how long did it take before you were ever so grateful for the next breath when it arrived. Or you worked out so hard you could not “catch your breath”. What does that term mean really? Maybe it means you could not catch up to air you needed right away. It took awhile and during that time you were very grateful for every bit of air you could find.

I had a job once up in Massachusetts that took me into a town where the major industry was curing leather. It was terrible just trying to get a little clean air. And we need our air to be clean. It’s not just enough that it is here.

I am not surprised that one of the major elements of meditation is concentration on breathing. It is such a basic and fundamental task in life. We do it all of the time every day for fifty or a hundred years. No time off is allowed.

So today I am grateful for the air we breathe. And I pray that we will take care of it for our children and grandchildren. So they can breathe too.
