Basically it is giving stuff away. I kind of like this trend to see who can give more stuff away and do it faster than anybody else. Yesterday evening I was reading about Facebook’s announcement that it was going to give away it’s platform architecture. Here take it! Merry Christmas!
I go on about MySpoogle because these are the other two really big players besides Facebook and someone needs to keep an eye on them. They are, of course, MySpace and Google. And they all want to be in your heart and soul when the dust settles. If that means they have to go to war amongst themselves well why not?
Facebook can give its stuff away faster than Google because it has been making it for a long time and it’s ready to go. It’s already given the digitized family jewels away to Bebo. So before MySpoogle gets going and starts giving away all their stuff Facebook will have already gone around to everybody and turned them into little Bebobooks.
Doorbell rings. MySpoogle: “Is anybody home? Hi. We would like to give you….Wait. You look strangely like that Facebook character Mr. Bebobook.
Blog owner: “Why do you say that?’
MySpoogle: “Because… you look so….Well, it doesn’t matter. I would like to give you today….”
Blog owner: “Oh yes. We already have one of those. But now we have one of these too. And it’s very exciting because it’s new and different. We like to change our templates at least once a month so this is right up our alley. ”
MySpoogle: “But, But…..”
Blog owner: ” Why don’t you try down the street. There’s a Blogspot community over there. It’s kind of run down and the houses are pretty close together. But at least you won’t have to do as much walking.”
So MySpoogle is in a difficult situation here. And there will be little Bebobooks sprouting up all over the place to make his life miserable. Which is kind of sad. Because Google gives away some great software like Picasa2. It’s easy to use and dependable.
How dependable are Bebobook and the baby Bebobooks going to be?
Meanwhile, in a footnote, Movable Type decided that now would be a good time to start giving their blogging stuff away too! I’m telling you it’s a foot race to see who can fill out Santa’s big suit before Christmas.
Please just tell me all the toys he gives out aren’t going to break in the first fifteen minutes of play. So who do you want to win here?
I just wish that Google and Facebook had worked out an alliance and shoved MySpace into the Recycle Bin. MySpace is full of space aliens who are hiding out from young Army Rangers with laser training. Spaceships may be fast but lasers are faster. The only problem is that they are not located everywhere they are needed. Yet.
This could all be settled tomorrow if Google would just sit down and write everybody a check. I can live without Facebook. It’s not like living without Wordpress or Snickers Ice Cream Bars. I can be bought.
