Blog Growth/ Finding New Readers

As time goes on I have started going to comments first when logging on to this blog. I used to go to the stats first of all. But comments are more important now because I look forward to hearing from certain people. The stats are not that much fun. And they are fairly predictable. People are not.

This is a good thing. Blogging could lose its appeal otherwise. Readership goes up when StumbledUpon is involved but then they come down again. We have discussed this before. The most important stat for me is the average time readers stay here actually reading or looking at photos. When SU is involved that time is most often less than a minute. Once in awhile somebody hangs around awhile. It is very gratifying to see someone spending ten or fifteen minutes here discovering posts from the past.

If anyone has returned here after initially finding this blog through SU I wish they would comment and let us know. It’s not clear if anyone has done this. As anyone can tell from comments there are about five or so readers who offer support on a regular basis. And I hope I return that support in a way that is helpful. As time goes on and blogging becomes a part of life it is clear to me how important this is.

And it would be great to increase the size of this group . That’s one of the nice things about friendship that is so different from some other kinds of attachment. The only idea I have about that involves a simple suggestion. We all have friends and associates who will do something for us if we ask them. If I ask one of my friends to read the blog of another one of my friends he will probably do it. If I suggest he take twenty or thirty minutes to really examine it I can be pretty sure he will do it. And at that point he may be willing to come back and begin the process of building a relationship with the author of the blog.

Imagine what would happen if the regular readers of this blog started doing this with each other. Do you want legitimate links and readers? There really is a difference between looking for new readers among strangers and looking for them among friends of friends. Relationships can be cultivated more easily among people you know.

Think about this for a moment. If you find a new reader through me then that person becomes your reader. And now he may become a reader of your reader. He could begin forming new relationships on a weekly basis without leaving this group. Because it is a group. It’s members just haven’t been introduced to each other yet. So my suggestion is to do this and in the process becoming a little more organized about finding new readers.

I’m not suggesting that all of your readers will be interested in reading my blog on a regular basis. But how many of them have given it a look? Possibly some of them will be interested in hanging around if they do. And some of their readers will also be interested. Some of them may be more interested in others. But they also are gaining new readers. I’m going to start reading them. And so will my readers. So there is a motivation for them to figure out what this crazy guy is trying to say.

So this is my experiment for this Sunday morning. I enjoy experiments. I hope you will share this post and enjoy it with me!
