Time For Autumn
Table of contents for Earlier Writings
Last week I had a little nostaglia festival regarding summer and its imminent departure. Beth is still going to the pool everyday and swimming so I realize summer is not over. I am walking around with several ounces of water in my clothes so I know summer is still with us. But the fondness for this season I possess and express so often is wearing very thin. It is time for the cool, dry air to come flying over the Appalachian mountains like a guided missile and take out this humid stuff some refer to as air. Any day now it is going to happen. Two days ago I was standing in the shade trying to find relief and realized that it made no difference. It was as uncomfortable in the shade as in the sun. Because there really wasn’t any sun to beat down on us in any meaningful way. There was humid haze and heat. Everywhere.
Would you like to see a new little friend of mine? I made a brief acquaintance with him a few weeks ago. But he was shy and soon departed without leaving a forwarding address. You really can’t see him in this photo. I was not quick enough to get the larger lens focused in his direction. And I am tempted to put this photo away. Maybe we will let it stay out awhile. It’s right on the line that runs through my brain. Acceptable. Or not so good.
The weather, however, is clearly to one side. I only wish I had as much control over it.
