Writing About Our Experiences Growing Up
I have been reading the blogs of two of my neighborhood pals at BlogCatalog tonight. And both of them just happened to be writing at length about childhood experiences. I find this kind of writing fascinating from an individual standpoint. And it is in my opinion more compelling reading if references are made to things we all recognize from our own pasts. Lozster, for example, talks about the Beatles while he describes sitting in a car waiting for his father. There is the picture of them crossing Abbey Road. I was waiting for them to walk up to Lozster in his father’s car and say hello for a moment! But things went in another direction and it was all very well done. There was much more there than the words . Well done, Lozster. http://midlife-journey.blogspot.com/2007/08/bleary-road.html
And my other neighbor, Nessa, talked about harvesting crops as a child and riding a water buffalo. I was caught up in her description of the work. And it was very hard work. But I was also seeing the country change as a whole as young people migrated to the city and jobs that began to open up there. And that resonates with my sense of history much as Lozster’s mention of the Beatles did. There is not much chance I would ever have had the opportunity to hear any of this if not for blogging. Our worlds are so far apart. My upbringing in Massachusetts did not involve anything like this although I harvested apples a few times. Even if I read about similar things in a book it would not be the same. A blog offers the opportunity to exchange thoughts. It is closer to sitting around a campfire than reading a book. The computer screen is the firelight of our modern age.
If you would like to read these two posts I recommend them. And maybe I will write something about being a child in the land of the Salem witches soon! http://nessa-mumblings.blogspot.com/
