I have been using a dial up connection this week and sometimes it works like a charm. It almost seems if you close your eyes like you have a broadband connection. And at other times, like now, it take forever to upload two pictures. It makes me want to take a short walk off the balcony. But that would not be a first around here. Someone in the penthouse was up on a ladder one day cleaning the outside of their windows. There is a little patio up there. And somehow the ladder went backwards. That has happened to many of us before. But we weren’t 18 stories up in the air. I was not here, thankfully, when he went by. But I am often aware that this day could be my last. You realize life is fragile when you are in your fifties and you try to enjoy each day as if it were your last.

Younger people often feel they are immune to damage. I have this theory that everybody knows somebody or at least knows of somebody who died on a motorcycle. I knew this guy in high school who played third base on our high school baseball team. I played shortstop. So we were neighbors. One day he managed to hit a ball so perfectly it nearly disappeared. It went down the hill behind left field without even touching the hill. It would have cleared the Green Monster in Fenway Park and landed in the middle of Kenmore Square. He was very pleased. The next time he got up he swung at the first pitch and missed it so completely he nearly decapitating the catcher and the umpire. It was one of those once in a lifetime things. Very soon after that day I heard he had gone for a ride on a motorcycle and launched himself into space and out of sight. It is a parent’s worst nightmare. If you have parents please be careful for their sake if not your own.
So my dial up is trying to function while I write this. If it completes its task I will share a picture of some cute little birds with you. They were all over the beach the other day while the big seagull chastised me for taking his picture. Hopefully they know how to stay safe on the beaches next to the Atlantic Ocean.
