And I use the word “held” instead of “had” because? That’s right! It was hell and to this day you remember the details of it.
I was starting out in the early 1970’s and having a difficult time finding employment in the Boston area. My young wife was expecting our first child and we were very poor. I used to wonder why none of our family sent us money but, perhaps, they were thinking I needed to discover one of the truly riveting motivations for going to work every day for the next thirty five years or so.
So I went to the newspaper and found an ad having to do with bathroom sanitation. Basically, it involved traveling around New England to various businesses and giving their porcelain bowls a “very special” chemical treatment. They required that you use your own vehicle and you were reimbursed for mileage. This sounded pretty good to me. I would be out and about without anyone looking over my shoulder. Free bird could still fly.
Unfortunately this was some years before you could punch a button and receive directions to your destination. Free bird spent a great deal of time wandering around New England looking for Howard Johnson and his friends. He also learned about the smell that permeates towns that produce leather or paper. And finally he came to understand that in some factories of note there was no one assigned to clean the rest rooms between his visits. Ever.
Those were the days my friend. And we prayed for them to end. That job lasted a few months before I began beating my head against the steering wheel. Fortunately, I soon found a job indoors and was able to save our transportation vehicle from early destruction. Positive change happens when we are open to it. This journal is a testament to that fact.
